The Dhammayangyi Temple was built by the cruel king Narathu (1167-70) who came by the throne by killing his own father. He was never able to complete the temple as he was murdered himself due to killing his Indian princess. Dhammayangyi is an impressive temple, the largest and most massive structure in Bagan and also with the best building quality of all of the Bagan temples. This was due to the evil character of king Narathu who took a close watch on the builders himself, sending them to death if he was able to put a needle between the bricks. From a distance, Dhammayangyi almost appears like a pyramid and does not resemble the much more elegant looking Ananda temple, but both temples share the same groundplan.
